Tuatara

About Tuatara
The Tuatara is an unusual reptile. Is has a spiky crest running down its back. Its backbone and skull are differently shaped than other reptiles. Its teeth are also permanently attached to its jaws. Unlike other reptiles, Tuataras grow very slowly. They don't reach breeding age until they are about 20 years old. They might even be able to live to be 100 years old.

Tuataras were once very common in New Zealand, but they are now one of the rarest animals in the world.

They are nocturnal; during the day they hide in burrows. At night, they hunt for birds' eggs, insects and other small animals.
