Skylark

About Skylark
Small brownish bird with triangular wings, small crest, long hind claws, and longish tail. Upperparts brown with darker streaks; wings darker with white trailing edges; tail edged white; underparts buffish-white. Legs and bill yellowish-brown; eyes brown.

The Skylark breeds in the late spring. The nest is a shallow cup made of dry grasses on the ground, often in a tuft of grass, and lined with finer grasses. The female lays 3-4 greenish-gray or creamy-gray eggs, mottled with dark grayish-brown, that are incubated by the female for about 11 days.

This bird has a beautiful aerial song. The Skylark is a bird that lives in the open, grassy landscapes from high hills to low coastal saltmarshes and dunes. It spends most of its time on the ground picking up seeds and occasional insects from the soil or from low growing plants. Sometimes they will pick up recently sown seeds, and may uproot the seedlings of wheat and other cereals to eat the sprouting grain.
