Scarlet Macaw

About Scarlet Macaw
Very large parrot with a long, tapering tail. Color is mainly scarlet; lower back, rump and tail coverts light blue; outer tail feathers blue; wing coverts yellow, tipped green; undertail pale blue; legs purplish-gray; upper mandible of bill pale horn color, lower mandible blackish; eyes pale yellow surrounded by bare white face patch which turns pinkish when the bird is excited.

These beautiful birds' breeding season varies with the region in which they live. They nest in cavities in trunks of tall dead trees. The female lays 2-4 white eggs that are incubated by both parents.

The Scarlet Macaw is a very sociable bird, living in pairs, family groups or in larger flocks of up to about 30 individuals. These birds make an unforgettable sight as they fly off at sunrise in search of food, While feeding they are generally silent, otherwise they can be quite loud. These birds move about the forest to maintain a supply of food as the many different tree species from which they feed come into flower, fruit and seed in different places and at different seasons. They are able to deal with hard and large seeds, but they also like fruits and leaves. They also like to eat clay particles, probably to help them deal with toxic substances in some of the food that they eat. At the end of the day they return to their roosts high in the trees which at times may contain as many as 50 birds.

These beautiful birds pair for life. A couple will stay close together all the time, both in the trees and in the air; they fly so close together that their wingtips almost touch.
