Rufous Hare-Wallaby or Mala
The Mala, or Rufous-Hair Wallaby, lives in the dry plains near drought resistant plants, feeding on seeds, grass, herbs and leaves. They rest in the shade during the day to stay cool.
This animal is highly endangered. It has become extinct in the wild on the mainland of Australia and can only be found in the wild on nearby islands. Two hundred years ago the Mala was very common in Australia. Programs are now in place to reintroduce this animal back into the mainland of Australia.
The rufous hare-wallaby will only breed if there has been enough rainfall. If there has not been enough rain, there will not be enough food for the young to survive.
