About
Pronghorn
Pronghorns live in the open prairie where speed is essential for survival. It is the fastest hoofed animal in the world, cruising at 30 mph, but reaching over 50 mph in short bursts. They run in long bounds on their slender legs and they have a habit of shaking themselves when they came to a halt. Pronghorns have distinctive brown and white markings, and their horns are almost black. Before Europeans arrived in North America there was more than 30 million pronghorns roaming the prairies. But hunting and farming has reduced those numbers to around 20,000.
