Blue Tit

About Blue Tit
Small, plump bird with long tail. Grayish-blue upperparts with yellowish-green shoulders, cobalt blue crown, white forehead, cheeks, and nape patch, black eyestripe, and black collar on nape, linking with black bib; sulfur yellow underparts. Some races have darker heads. Dark slate-blue legs; black bill; dark brown eyes.

In the spring and early summer, the female builds a cup nest of grasses, dead leaves, mosses, hair and spider webs, lined with hair and feathers, in a hole in a tree or wall or in a nest box. They lay 7-12 white eggs, finely speckled or blotched with purplish red or reddish-brown. The female takes care of eggs for 12-16 days while the male brings food.

Common in a wide variety of habitats throughout its range. The Blue Tit is an adaptable opportunist with a talent for making the most of local and seasonal food sources. It takes a wide variety of natural foods, from insects and spiders to pollen and nectar, picking edible items from twigs and leaves as it forages though trees and shrubs. It is extremely acrobatic, often hanging upside down to get at its food.

It has learned to raid food for many sources. They often forge in flocks, often with other tit species.

They often use nest boxes, laying large clutches of eggs. The hatching of the chicks is timed to coincide with the spring flush with juicy caterpillars, and the adults are kept very busy catching and carrying this protein rich food to their hungry young. This is never a problem for woodland nesters, but Blue Tits that nest in backyard nest boxes often have problems feeding their large broods of young, partly because many caterpillars are destroyed by garden pesticides.
