Atlantic Salmon

About Atlantic Salmon
The Atlantic Salmon spawn in the fall and early winter. The Atlantic Salmon will lay eggs more than once in its lifetime unlike the Chinook Salmon that spawns only once and then dies. The new fish, or parr as they are called, remain in the river for 1-4 years. When they are young they look a lot like trout. After the parr stage, they change to silvery smolt. Sometime around the 4th year they will head for the sea. Once they hit the saltwater they may stay there for a couple of years or they may head back after the first year. The latter fish are then known as grilse. In that first year they grow from small 6 inch (15cm) fish to a weight of 4 to 5 lbs. (1.8 to 2.2kg). After 3 winters at sea they may weigh as much as 15 to 30 lbs. (7 to 14kg). While 4-6 years at sea they may weigh as much as 70 lbs. (32kg). With a few exceptions, Atlantic Salmon return to their parent river to spawn. The feeding grounds are off Greenland.

Sea fish are blue/silver. Once into freshwater they change to dirty red in the case of the male and blackish silver in the female.
